Job Title: Flight Nurse Full Time/PRN
Work Location: Various Division/Department: AirMed
Reports To: Chief Flight Nurse
Job Description:
The primary focus of a Flight Nurse is to provide advanced life support to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with a deployment. The flight nurse is qualified in advanced pre-hospital emergency care and services by a competency based educational program of clinical, didactic, and practice. Roles of the flight nurse may include but are not limited to: evacuation assistance, emergency call response, inter-facility transports, on-scene stand-by, search and rescue support, hospital or shelter staffing. The flight nurse should possess the education, maturity and experience to operate safely in areas that may pose increased risks and hazards that are not typical in day-to-day emergency medical services operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Autonomously evaluate critically ill or injured patients of all age groups (neonatal through adult), provide therapeutic intervention, emergency interventions, and preparation for transport (via ground, helicopter, or airplane) from hospitals or accident scenes.
• Provide patient care within the policies, protocols and guidelines developed by Pafford Medical Services.
• Assess for and detect changes in the status of patients and demonstrate a proactive approach to solving patient and family problems.
• Maintain complete and accurate records, participate in unit quality assurance programs, perform data collection and participate in research activities.
• Communicate effectively in working with outside institutions/agencies, including hospitals, EMS, police and fire departments.
• Plan, organize and position equipment and supplies for use in emergency conditions before, during and after transport.
• Maintain contact with patients, families and referring facility physicians, nurses and pre-hospital personnel.
• Participate in clinical instruction for internal and external groups.
• Collect, compile and assess clinical and demographic data on this program.
• Maintain clinical competence across all aspects of the Pafford Medical Services scope of practice, including, but not limited to; treatment including advanced ventilator management and invasive circulatory devices, obstetric emergencies, trauma patient care across the lifespan, critical care across the lifespan, and any other patient populations Pafford Medical Services may transport.
• Perform all physical requirements of job in confined spaces and under adverse environmental conditions.
• Flight nurses expected to complete transport missions initiated with in the timeframe of your shift, understanding that completion of these missions might require you to work beyond normal work hours.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to safety procedures set forth by Pafford Medical Services and the FAA.
• Active involvement in one or more departmental committees.
• Represent Pafford Air Med as a customer service ambassador for Pafford Medical Services
• Acting as an intermediary and communicator between the flight crew and flight medical team.
Qualifications:
• Current licensure to practice in the State of Arkansas and Oklahoma.
• Minimum of two years current staff nursing experience (within the last 5 years).
• Minimum two years critical care/emergency department experience in an intensive care or emergency department setting at a Level I or II trauma center or regional referral/tertiary care center.
• Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills and autonomous practice as evidenced by successful completion of selective testing tools in areas of advanced practice nursing including hemodynamically unstable patients, critically ill pediatric patients, patients with airway or respiratory compromise, acute trauma, multi organ system failure patients, etc…
• Demonstrated leadership abilities as evidenced by peer review and annual evaluation.
• Demonstrated problem solving skills and independent decision making in working with peers, residents and/or attending physicians within and outside institutional boundaries.
• Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal skills as evidenced by feedback from others/evaluation and interview process.
• Current Nursing licensure with state licensure achieved in 6 mos.
• Current ACLS/PALS/NRP certification.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
• The employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 50,
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Work may require sitting, lifting, stooping, bending, stretching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, reaching, and other physical exertion.
• Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly
• Must possess visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, and operate a motor vehicle.
